Many raw materials of cosmetics are nutrients for microbial growth and reproduction, and cosmetics are easily contaminated by microorganisms in the process of production and use, therefore, it is necessary to add an appropriate amount of antiseptic ingredients, we should look at the preservatives in cosmetics rationally and scientifically. Generally speaking, it is safe to use preservatives in cosmetics in strict accordance with the requirements of the Technical Specifications for Cosmetics.

Why should preservatives be added to cosmetics?

We live in an environment full of microorganisms. Cosmetics bought with the lid open are easily contaminated, and if they do not contain antibacterial substances, they will deteriorate quickly even if put in the refrigerator.

Many of the raw materials in cosmetics are nutrients for the growth and reproduction of microorganisms, and under the right temperature and humidity conditions, microorganisms can grow and reproduce rapidly. During the production of cosmetics, if the equipment and environment are not thoroughly cleaned and disinfected, microorganisms are easily infected. In addition, when our hands come in contact with cosmetics, we may also introduce microorganisms into them. Preservatives are a class of substances that are used to inhibit or prevent the growth and reproduction of microorganisms, and thus prevent the deterioration of products. To ensure that cosmetics are safe and effective during production, use, and storage, it is necessary to add one or more preservatives to cosmetics to inhibit the growth of microorganisms and to ensure that the products do not deteriorate due to contamination during the shelf life.

There is a wide variety of preservatives and more than one hundred types of chemical preservatives can be used in cosmetics. For the sake of safety, many countries in the world have made relevant regulations on the use of preservatives in cosmetics. China's "Safety Technical Specification for Cosmetics" stipulates that 51 types of preservatives can be used in cosmetics, and stipulates the varieties of preservatives for cosmetics, the scope of use, and restrictions, not in the list of preservatives permitted to use the antibacterial ingredients can not be used in cosmetics.

Is it safer not to add preservatives to cosmetic products?

A lot of consumers "talk about decay" and think that preservative-free cosmetics are safe and high quality. In order to meet the psychological needs of consumers, some cosmetic companies have introduced "fresh", "natural", "preservative-free" and "additive-free" cosmetics to meet the needs of consumers. "The concept of cosmetics such as "purely natural extracts", "no chemical reagents", "no preservatives", etc., is claimed by such cosmetics. But is this really the case?

At present, there are several main types of so-called preservative-free cosmetics: the first is truly preservative-free products, mainly through packaging design and substrate changes to achieve the purpose of not using preservatives. For example, easy microbial growth of skincare products generally use small packaging or even single-use packaging, vacuum packaging, anti-contact design, to cut off microbial contamination pathways; cleaning products by changing the matrix and made of cleansing powder, in order to effectively control the growth of microorganisms. The cleansing products are made from a modified substrate to effectively control the growth of microorganisms. These products are usually relatively expensive. For example, perfume usually contains a large amount of ethanol, which has its own anti-bacterial effect, and is packaged in a sealed package without the need to add preservatives. The third kind of situation belongs to play preservative concept "wipe the ball", this kind of product is not without the use of antiseptic ingredients, just add the effect of inhibition of other cosmetic ingredients, but these ingredients do not belong to the prospective use of preservatives, and even some products are added to the list of preservatives, its safety risk is not only not reduced but also greater. The fourth is false propaganda or misleading propaganda products, these products usually evade the use of promotional language preservatives, one-sided publicity without the use of preservatives.

Consumers should be rational in dealing with preservatives, cosmetics, the reasonable use of preservatives is safe, but also essential, the choice of products without the use of preservatives to be cautious. In addition, China prohibits the labeling of cosmetic products to advertise "no so-and-so raw materials" and other exaggerated false propaganda terms that belittle similar products. Therefore, products that deliberately advertise as "methyl paraben-free" or "phenoxyethanol-free" should be resolutely avoided.
